Before I begin reflecting on the content our guest speaker Jesse Miller gave us from our last class, just wanted to begin by reflecting on what a fantastic speaker or presenter he was. The confidence, the ability to keep the whole class hooked, the usage of comedy. He was probably the best ‘guest speaker’ brought into one of my classes since elementary school. What I took away from our session with him was the big reminder of how self conscious we as future educators need to be with our online and social media activity. I always knew about this going into the profession, but this detailed and expanded reminder given to us by Jesse was another wake up call. Some of the details of things we cannot be seen doing on any online posts or activity surprised me, and were things I did not know we had to be super careful about going forward. Again however, most of the privacy issues Jesse brought up such as snapchat holding the files of all the images and texts we sent on the app was not new to me nor was it a surprise. What all this information means to me going forward however is that I will now have another layer of cautiousness with everything I do or send on social media, as well as what and when people are taking pictures of me. I must always think of my future career now and prioritize this way of thinking with everything to do with social media or digital imagery going forward in my life from this point. This was a much needed wake up call that we all needed, a reminder to be careful and make smart decisions within this ever innovating era of technology.
