This weeks class was very enjoyable as we got to experience some outside education and technology in the University of Victoria’s very own and very beautiful Finnerty Gardens. It was not only amazing to get outdoors during our class with the beautiful weather, but to do a little scavenger hunt as well. Hunting down the QR codes gave us all an incentive to search and walk through the entire garden, with younger children giving them tasks to complete when having a lesson or activity outdoors is important in keeping every student on task, as there are endless distractions in nature! Primary students will always get daily outside time due to recess and lunch break, but creating the ability to take your class outside for a lesson and learning experience is so valuable. Nature scavenger hunts, games for physical education, map making, garden planting, setting up weather stations, and art creation using the natural environment resources are all examples of outdoor education activities you can do with any primary grade level. You can even take your class outside for story time/reading time, or for any regular segment of the day plan that would usually occur in the classroom every once in a while when it is a beautiful day. The class would greatly appreciate all this extra time outside instead of being cooped up inside, when I am teaching I will definitely focus on taking my class outside as much as possible, and maybe integrate some outdoor technology as well! The QR scavenger hunt we did is definitely something I may steal in the future, but their is so much else you can do with the use of apps. Fitness trackers to track running, heart rate, etc for physical education is the first example that came to me, I would have to figure out the correct way to implement this into the class but regardless there are so many different applications that can be used to promote outdoor education and learning.
