This week we learned about the use of gamification in the classroom. I think gamification is one of the best educational strategies a teacher can use in any grade level. It’s fun learning! Of course it cannot only be games in the classroom as a variety of teaching methods must be used to benefit student learning in all sorts of ways, but adding gamified learning methods to a class every once in a while is extremely beneficial. I remember how excited I would get in high school when we would play games like kahoot in high school, and cool math games in elementary school. Personally, when learning is fun that is when I learn most! The guest speaker we had in these weeks class told us how she uses Minecraft in her classroom as a creative learning resource. She also told us how one of her students was really struggling with their classwork so she allowed him to show his work on Minecraft! I thought this combination of incisiveness and gamification was incredible and inspired me to try and be this flexible for my future students. The student’s needs are very important, and I always find it amazing how many different ways there is to implement different learning methods for specific students who have alternate needs or abilities than others. With technology and gamification all this this possible and the possibilities are endless. I’m looking forward to using many forms of gamification in my future classroom, perhaps I will even implement a learning games day once a week or something. There must always be a balance however as I briefly mentioned earlier, because it is still educational schooling and games cannot run the show, but gamification is such a fantastic tool and treat for students to get creative and have fun while learning all the same.
